A 12-year veteran, the Arizona State alum has played for the Washington Redskins (1997–2000), San Francisco 49ers (2001–2007) and San Diego Chargers (2008). He was released by the Chargers on Nov. 12.
The move comes a day after Dolphins starting inside linebacker Channing Crowder missed the team's Week 16 game with a knee injury.
I'll have full details and analysis on the move when more info becomes available.
UPDATE: The Dolphins have waived wide receiver Chris Hannon to make room for Smith on the roster. Hannon was inactive for two games after being claimed off waivers from the 49ers.
