Breaking News: Dolphins Re-Sign OT Vernon Carey

According to Edgar Thompson of the Palm Beach Post, the Miami Dolphins have re-signed impending free agent offensive tackle Vernon Carey to a multi-year deal. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Selected by the Dolphins 23rd overall in the 2004 NFL Draft, Carey has started 64 games for the Dolphins and played in 78 total. He has started all 16 games for each for each of the past three season, including every game at right tackle in 2008.

The surprising move comes just a week before the free agent signing period is set to open. With the Steelers placing the franchise tag on Max Starks and the Panthers re-signing Jordan Gross, Carey looked to be the top offensive tackle on the market.

I'll have more on this move in an analysis article this weekend, plus my offseason preview for the offensive tackles (which was unfortunately made before the news of the Carey signing broke).
