Dolphins' 2011 preseason schedule revealed

While we still don't know if there will actually be a 2011 NFL season, the league has officially released the planned schedule for this year's preseason.

The Dolphins will face some familiar exhibition foes in 2011, opening at the Atlanta Falcons on Aug. 13. They'll head home to host the Carolina Panthers a week later on Aug. 20.

After an in-state battle with a visit to Tampa Bay on Aug. 27, the Dolphins will conclude their preseason against the Dallas Cowboys in Miami on Sept. 1.

In all, the Dolphins' 2011 preseason schedule, which features none of the league's 12 nationally-televised games, looks like this:
  • Aug. 13 — at Atlanta Falcons
  • Aug. 20 — vs. Carolina Panthers
  • Aug. 27 — at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Sept. 1 — vs. Dallas Cowboys
And here are some random factoids about the Dolphins 2011 preseason opponents:
  • Opponents' combined record in 2010: 31-33
  • Of the four opponents, only Atlanta made the playoffs in 2010 (winning the NFC South)
  • The Dolphins will face the teams with the best (Atlanta, 13-3) and worst (2-14) records in the NFC last season
  • The Dolphins faced three of these four teams in the 2010 preseason, with only Jacksonville being left out in favor of new addition Carolina
  • The Dolphins also concluded their 2010 preseason against the Cowboys, a 27-25 loss in Dallas
  • This will be the first time the Dolphins have not faced the Jaguars in the preseason since 2002
  • 2011 will be the first year since 1998 that the Dolphins did not face a fellow AFC team in the preseason

The Dolphins, who finished the 2010 regular season with a 7-9 record, won their first two preseason contests in 2010 over the Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars, only to drop the final two games against Atlanta and Dallas.

For a refresher, here is my January article on the Dolphins' 2011 regular season opponents. The official regular season schedule is expected to be released later this month.
