Dolphins cutdown live blog

As I did last year, I will once again be running a live blog documenting all of the Dolphins' imminent cuts. Remember, the Dolphins must cut from 80 down to 53 for the regular season by Saturday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. ET, so that's 27 players on the move!

Also, be sure to check out my final projected 53-man roster to see how my predictions compare!

Friday

4:08pm — The Dolphins have waived tight end Dedrick Epps, per The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero. No surprises there, as he was a long shot to beat out Mastrud or Shuler. Roster is at 79.

5:53pm — Jeff Darlington of The Miami Herald has the Dolphins waiving safety Gerald Alexander and wide receiver John Matthews. Both just joined the team in recent weeks so they were a bit behind. Roster is at 77.

Saturday

12:29pm — Ben Volin confirms the Dolphins have waived quarterback Kevin O'Connell. As of now, undrafted rookie Pat Devlin remains the third-string quarterback. Roster is at 76.

2:26pm — Volin also has the Dolphins waiving strong safety Mark Restelli. No surprises there, as the former CFL linebacker had no chance of cracking the squad. Roster is at 75.

4:46pm — Salguero has a source relaying that the Dolphins have terminated the contract of running back Larry Johnson. This bodes well for Lex Hilliard's chances of sticking, athough the Dolphins may look on the waiver wire for another back. There is also a chance Johnson could be re-signed after Week 1, when his contract for the year would not be guaranteed. Roster is at 74.

4:55pm — ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Dolphins have released veteran cornerback Will Allen. Allen had missed the past two seasons dealing with knee injuries and also missed time in training camp while battling with Benny Sapp for the team's nickel job. Roster is at 73.

5:29pm — Omar Kelly says the Dolphins have let go cornerback Nate Ness, and added the team told him they don't expect he'll clear waivers. That implies that if he does, he'd be back on practice squad. Allen and Ness being cut is good news for Nolan Carroll and rookie Jimmy Wilson. Roster is at 72.

6:01pm — Volin reports undrafted rookie receiver/returner Phillip Livas has been cut. Could be a possibility for practice squad. He had a 75-yard punt return touchdown in the preseason opener, but was unimpressive beyond that. Marlon Moore is really the only guy in contention for a potential sixth receiver spot. Roster is at 71.

6:08pm — Volin now reports the Dolphins have waived undrafted rookie guard Garrett Chisolm. Chisolm spent most of the preseason on the non-football injury list recovering from a torn ACL before being activated this week. He has potential and is a prime practice squad candidate. Roster is at 70.

6:36pm — The Dolphins have officially announced all roster moves made today. Excluding the above moves already discussed, this is what we have: Offensive tackle Lydon Murtha was placed on injured reserve. Veteran nose tackle Ronald Fields, fullback Lousaka Polite (called it!), and offensive tackle Ray Willis had their contracts terminated. Waived are cornerback Vincent Agnew, tight end Brett Brackett, wide receiver Patrick Carter, quarterback Pat Devlin, linebacker Jonathan Freeny, running back Nic Grigsby, offensive tackle D. J. Jones, offensive tackle Matt Kopa, linebacker David Nixon, wide receiver Julius Pruitt, defensive end Rob Rose, tight end Mickey Shuler, and linebacker Quinton Spears.

Dolphins roster is now at 53, although more transactions could come tomorrow or Monday as players are claimed off waivers. I'll have in-depth analysis on all these moves tonight!

As always, check out the updated projected depth chart reflecting these transactions here.
